Voilà! :) A solution that works across systems (it would work in a similar way with Windows) and is completely portable as the notes are nothing but text files. Searching encompasses all notes content and occurs. I can use command-J and command-K to switch to the next or previous note, respectively, while keeping my keyboard focus in either the search bar or the text-entry pane. With Notational Velocity, searching for notes is not a separate action rather, it is the primary interface. Instead of offering only a vertical view for your notes, Notational Velocity. Notational Velocity’s useful keyboard shortcuts or hotkeys also make scrolling through my tasks a breeze. Then I went to the Mac and set the source directory to be the same in Preferences > Storage as well as using Plain Text files. Notational Velocity Alt takes everything Notational Velocity does well and adds a handful of new features. nvpy.cfg notes_as_txt = 1 txt_path = /home/miguel/Dropbox/nv/ simplenote_sync = 0 It allows users to create notes using solely a computer keyboard and search them. Then edit the configuration file to write to plain text files instead of json, to write to your dropbox folder and to keep SimpleNote off: # cat. Notational Velocity is a computer program for Mac OS X used for notetaking. Here are the install steps on my Fedora: # yum install python python-markdown python-pip tkinter # pip install nvpy # xdg-desktop-menu install /usr/lib/python2.7/site-packages/nvpy/sktop The bad side: no Linux version… :( And then I found nvPY, as per the author an “ugly” port to Linux, but that works. This is the original app that inspired ResophNotes for Windows - like the other apps here, it synchronizes with Simplenote. I installed in on my Mac with zero hassle and played around with it. OS X Notational Velocity Mac users should check out Notational Velocity, which is widely considered to be amazing. It’s called Notational Velocity and is beautiful in its simplicity. After a lot of searching I found it yesterday. Notational Velocity is not available for Windows but there are plenty of alternatives that runs on Windows with similar functionality. I did not want to use a central note service like SimpleNote or Evernote for security concerns and to keep my notes close at hand in case network is out, so I wanted something that was a basic note taking software with a powerful search ability. I would expect as much from a program written in Mono that hasn’t been updated for a while. You press a shortcut to bring up the window and just start typing. What triggered it for me was the fact that on Fedora 18 Tomboy keeps crashing at random times. Notational Velocity is a way to take notes quickly and effortlessly using just your keyboard. Of course with upgrades that all broke down and I had two different sets of notes. For a while I tried (and failed) synchronizing them using Dropbox by tricking Tomboy with symbolic links so it would think it was writing locally but actually writing remotely. I have a Fedora at work and a Mac at home and I needed to share notes between them. Installing Notational Velocity and it’s cousin nvpy NOTATIONAL VELOCITY is an application that stores and retrieves notes.
